God Opening Doors

Christine looked into the eyes of her 8-year old son and knew what she had to do. Tomorrow she would take a giant step towards her future – working on getting her GED.

But this step wouldn’t be easy for Christine because she struggled with the fear of failure, being looked down upon and feeling inadequate. Knowing her courage would be a good example for her son, she enrolled in the Center’s Adult Education program and began working one-one-one with a tutor. After several months, Christine took the exam and passed.

“Center of Hope made getting my GED easy,” exclaimed Christine. “The tutors worked with my schedule and went above and beyond in explaining subjects in a way I could understand. Through working with my tutors, I was able to build lasting friendships and felt supported throughout my journey. I wouldn’t have gained my GED without the Center.”

Christine is just one of many individuals who struggle with reading and math skills. In fact, 53% of the individuals who enroll in classes at the Center do not have their high school diploma or their GED. In order to combat this issue, the Center began an Adult Education program in 2012. Students enter this program for many different reasons: learning how to read, getting help filling out a job application, studying for their GED exam or even getting help with obtaining a work certification. Whatever their reason is for coming, our tutors work with students to help achieve their specific goals.

“The skills I have learned not only help me but have helped my son too. What a joy it is to be able to help him with his homework,” says Christine. “I am so happy to have my GED and am excited to see the doors that will open up for my future!
